Y'know, even as a small kid I was horrified by Laura Ingalls Wilder's account of a common drinking cup on a train trip she took as a child. She and Ma and Mary thought they were very cosmopolitan indeed as they shared that shiny tin cup after some strange man finished drinking out of it. URGH!

Oh, I remember that part! I thought it was so gross, too. And I remember another part-- it might have been in the same book-- when they all ate at a boarding house and used a roller towel when they washed up before eating. The description was how a roller towel was wonderful because it could be turned until you found a dry place. *vomit*
