Ah! Apparently, there's a difference between mint sauce, which is a vinegary minty sauce and mint jelly, which is mint-flavored apple jelly.
I didn't know this until I started dating a Brit, who has mint sauce and ... wow, it's really different. It's good, but it takes a little getting used to.
Lamb with mint jelly is an old, old tradition. My mother always had it when I was a child. But I prefer mint sauce myself, because it's got vinegar as well as sugar in it, which cuts the sweetness. It's also very easy to make, or if you don't want to make it, Crosse & Blackwell makes a bottled version that's quite good. TBH, since I discovered mint sauce I can't imagine having lamb or lamb chops without it. It's fantastic that way!
I couldn't agree with you more about the food finally looking edible in a vintage advert. Or am I just biased because it's lamb and stuffed tomatoes? It's hard to make meat look bad (spoken by a true carnivore).
