Hard for younger generations to realize it, but televisions like this were a big event for families when they were able to get one. Radios came before them, of course, and now electronic gizmos are everywhere. I doubt many people who grew up with computers and cellphones and all the rest could even conceive of life without even a TV or radio. :)

I remember these consoles, how freaking old am I...

What was funny was that once those old things finally died, you'd buy a new tv, without all the wood, and put it on top of the old, no longer working set. The predecessors to today's entertainment units!
