I love how they call it “exciting”.

Mom: Hey kids, guess what we’re having for dinner?

Kids: We dunno…?

Mom: Canned spaghetti! With EGGS on top!

Kids: OMGYAAAAAAAYYYYYY *kermit flail*

LOL at the Kermit flail. I'd suggest that this sounds like a concoction for trashy_eats, but I doubt anyone there would eat it, either.

And I'm a big fan of eating cold ravioli out of the can, but rare is the food that's sadder than canned spaghetti. Spaghetti is like a basic element of American cuisine, and one of the simplest "look at me, I'm cooking!" meals possible. Boil spaghetti 'til soft. Heat jar of sauce until hot. Ta da!

... but no. For some, that's still not easy enough, and that's sad.

I find it fascinating that they're explicitly advertising a fast-day dish (for Lent), even if describing it as Easter Eggs in nests is slightly getting ahead of the church calendar and suggests that the home economist wasn't actually Catholic.

The canned spaghetti is nasty, of course, but eggs cooked in a tomato sauce (with nice chunky vegetables and a bit of chilli and perhaps a little cheese) are delicious, so I can see where the idea came from.

It's New Zealand. And Church of England is about as close to Catholic as you can get without being Catholic.

I am C of E (and not just in the 'I'm not religious, I'm Church of England' sense), but I don't believe for a moment that the number of Anglicans taking the Lenten fast seriously enough to abstain from meat all the way through Lent would make a special advertising campaign worth while. Definitely targeted at Roman Catholics. (Not Orthodox, obviously, because of the eggs).

Why Kia-Ora? That's a greeting in Maori and this is, what, American? [is puzzled]

Still odd, but at least they're closer to us.

Gosh, they still sell that? Reminds me of primary school.

Revolting stuff.

New Zealand, possibly?

My partner is from New Zealand. She loves canned spaghetti (let's just say, it's one of the few things we disagree on)but I doubt even she would like hard boiled eggs on it!

We do still have the Franco-American/Chef Boyardee canned spaghetti here in the states. I won't go near it, but the ravioli? Hand it over!

I've never seen that brand here. I have however seen pizzas with canned spaghetti on top and it's always on the supermarket shelves. Why do people buy it? Pasta is easy to cook.

Chef Boyardee canned ravioli is the best. The sodium overdose is worth it!!

Actually that's about the only use I can think of for canned spaghetti: Klingon food at a geek party!

Ugh.

This is an old combo. I grew up eating eggs poached hard in tomato sauce and served with spaghetti--it was common for Lent. To this day, it's a big comfort food for me!

Agreed. Mind, they'd never eat spaghetti out of a can, but my South Philly Italian in-laws sometimes eat it with eggs poached in the "gravy" (red sauce).

Yes, it's actually pretty good (as long as you don't get the spaghetti out of a can).

Indeed, eggs poached in a spicey tomato sauce with lots of chilis! Sort of an Italian Eggs Ranchero.

A girl I knew put peeled, semi-hard cooked eggs in her home made red sauce as it was cooking, and it was a family tradition for her. It was the first time I'd ever had a long cooked HB egg with spaghetti, but it actually was really good, and I've done it myself a few times since then. The only internet reference I've ever found to it was a Tampa area web forum. It makes sense - eggs are an inexpensive and filling protein, so cheaper to feed a crowd that way than meat, which not everyone could afford.

But all of that said, canned spag is absolutely disgusting!

Why ruin some perfectly good canned spaghetti with hard-boiled eggs? =P Like you said, it's two things that should never go together.
