Well the frame looks right for quilting, and the woman in purple in the foreground has her hands positioned right, but the needles and thread seems to be more implied than shown.

And you would never, never, never have food or drink around your quilting, especially something like cola that's guaranteed to stain. A double wedding ring quilt like that represents possibly hundreds of hours of hand piecing even before it's quilted, you can't machine piece it. It is intended for a family heirloom, and if I saw a quilter with a open bottle of cola anywhere near it, someone would be getting a smacking!

Wow, you got that right!

To clarify, double wedding ring is one of the most difficult to piece, which is why almost no-one does it any more, certainly not with that many pieces per arc. Each different colored piece must be cut out separately, and the white pieces cut out carefuly to have the right curve. Then they must be hand sewen together with precise 1/4" seams, or it won't all fit. Plus you have to use a light hand and be careful, because those curved pieces stretch very easily, leading to puckers and tucks -- not pretty.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Especially a double wedding ring (with squared off rings?) I've never seen one like that, have you?

Are you referring to the pink and blue 4-patch where the rings meet? I have a one done by a friend of my mother's in the 40's that is like that. Otherwise, the rings are a little off true and the pieces in the arcs are slap-dash, but I put that down to sloppiness of the artist, like not showing any needles or spools of thread.

Yes, the one in red could also be stitching, but where are the supplies???

I was thinking the same thing, about not having any food or beverage near a quilting frame.

Yeah, I'm wondering why Coke (or their advertiser) would even think to post this in the 1950s, because it sure would put off every housewife who's ever put in 1,000 of hours, numerous pinched fingers/thumbs, and cramped hands.

Getting together to quilt was just an excuse to talk about sex, men, and birthing babies.

Sylvia<---" what did you do with your placenta, Marge?"
Marge<---" oh, I chopped it up and fed it to Charlie, he thought it was liver."

Gladys: Did you remember the Jell-O or not?

Marge: But of course, Needed something to put the canned peas in.

well it was clear to me it was quilting, except I can't see any needle or thread... :S Unless they're just *admiring* her new quilt.

There's something about Coke in bottles instead of cans. :)

I remember helping my grandmother with supplies for her resturant and those wooden boxes with the cut-outs for handles were used all the time. I have no idea if those kind of boxes are still used. Probably too practical to survive. ;)

Jeez, whenever I see a Coke ad, I crave one! *hopeless*

Right there with you--my tiny town was among the last in the nation to stop using those machines with the bottles that you pulled, by hand--and then when you finished the Coke, you put the empty glass bottle back in those wooden cases for recycling.

You're right though--there was something about those bottles. I swear it made the drink seem colder. There's nothing like ice cold Coca Cola on a hot day...

Oh, god, yes! The ads that show frosty bottles of Coke get me every time! :)

I remember those Coke machines. I know cans are probably more convenient or something but I still like bottles better. I know that in recent years Coke offers their product in bottles during the Christmas season and use the famous images of Santa Claus on the packaging. :)

Oh, I loved those machines. A grape Nehi (which seemed as large as I was) was the best thing in the world on a hot day. As were Cokes. Mmmmmm!

Heh, when I hear grape Nehi I think of Radar from M.A.S.H. ;)

Radar knew a good thing! But I always thought his little bottles were inaccurate. A proper Nehi is actually a knee-high! And now I'm dying for one...

Betsy: Oh, face it, gals. This is the most whacked out Olympic Flag we could've stitched up.

Marge: Take the starch out of your bloomers, Betsy. What did the IOC expect for only one rack?

Phyllis: I told you we should have held out for Coca-Cola stock!

You're all totally missing the point here. The hostess is being congratulated on using a quaint old quilt as a tablecloth. The maid should be out any moment with the finger sandwiches and something to mop up the forming condensation under that bowl of Coke and ice.

Great ad. I have (and had) some quilters in my family, so the ladies quilting remind me of them. *gets all nostalgic* :)
