Seems like I missed so much, growing up with Leggs pantyhose...

On the one hand, this ad makes me bristle because it's really pretty sexist, but on the other hand, it's just so...romantic...in a way I can't explain.

Then, too, it's a little creepy to talk about a young girl wearing garters...if I was a dad, I think I'd be a little weirded out, having that image put into my head.

This is a great ad, though.

Well, it's not like there was an alternative... Of course underwear must always have had an erotic charge, but stockings wouldn't have had the almost fetishy connotations they do now. (Although it very carefully doesn't mention garters.

I also suspect that the ad would have run in a women's magazine, so dad probably wouldn't have seen it at all - the copy definitely feels to me as if it's aimed at mothers specifically (it talks about 'your legs').

Garters and stockings being sexy is a recent thing, since the advent of panythose.

Personally if I'm going to wear something sheer (as opposed to tights) I prefer stockings with a garter belt, but that's because I hate the sensation of sitting down in nylon. I get all sweaty in places I just do not like being sweaty. Even when it comes to tights, I've moved from nylon to more natural fibers whenever possible.

Heh. Looking at the date, I must admit my first thought was of all those young women in Britain, drawing fake seams on their calves before they went out dancing, because you couldn't get nylons, never mind silk.*

* Barring the black market and/ or an American boyfriend, but there wouldn't have been many of them about in 1942, either....

I do believe this is the most wonderful ad I've seen to market a product at a 'coming of age' demographic. Feminist concerns aside, it's just visually lovely and the copy is sweet and dreamy.
