where 60-second service begins with a disembodied head holding a soda and ends with a hamburger the size of a small child.

Which reminds me of a joke my dad told me when I was about 10...

Why did the Dairy Queen get pregnant? Because the Burger King forgot to put a wrapper on his Whopper.

And I got it (even though I'm not sure I knew what a condom was, yet)...

Yeah, I suppose that explains a lot.

Ahhh...the "good ol' days" when the Burger King didn't looked like a crazed pedophile playing dress-up.

1) There is no reason on Earth why every Burger King cannot or should not look exactly like this today, and 2) oh. my. god. that burger should have a "shown to scale" asterisk and be offered at every location. I don't care if it would be $20. Maybe they did used to have it, but finding enough of the giant mutant onions and tomatoes became too troublesome.

I thought it was cool that Asheville was on the ball enough to have one of the first wave of BKs... until I noticed that Chicago already had forty-four. The Puerto Rico BK can be briefly seen in the MST3K Progress Island, USA short. It unfortunately already had the ugly brown 70s treatment, though.

I TOTALLY remember that style store and the 'King on a Bun' logo.
As a matter of fact, the Wilmington DE store is the one I would remember this from...

The top half looks like it should be an ad for In-n-Out.

I want a burger twice the size of my head!

I like how they explain the fast-food concept.

I love this '50s/early '60s design. So sleek and clean! And the Burger King is cute! :)

That burger would last me for week! ;)

I really like that old building! That King is a lot less creepy than the one they use today.

Look for the arches that are kind of sharply angled and not at all golden!

I want a Whopper that size! It may take me a week to eat it, but who cares?

I remember in the late '60s, the chain had an ad where the jingle was, "The bigger the burger, the better the burger, the burgers are bigger at Burger King!" This was on radio in Syracuse, a market I note isn't listed above, so I'm guessing this ad is from the early to mid-sixties.

And whomever ran the BK franchises in Chicago must have been doing a heckuva job -- either that or Burger King simply assimilated the restaurants of a local chain.
