It's almost too sickeningly sweet. I would buy them, wrapped in brown paper, from a guy in an alley, while I furtively sneaked them home.

I couldn't say it better than this. :)

Oh dear Goddess, I remember those! I'm pretty sure they had some kitty ones too. Not sure where I used to see these ads, but I'm thinking they might have been in my mother's Women's Day or Family Circle. Funny how you see things every day for such a long time and then completely forget about them.

I remember these, too, and I think you're right about there being kitty ones. We didn't own any of the paintings, but I know I saw them in magazine ads.

My grandparents had a few of these. Try sleeping with THESE guys staring at you all night long; I had to take 'em down whenever we'd visit and hide them in the closet. Or better yet another bedroom entirely's closet.

Well, it beats the black velver clown painting my auntie had. That was truly terrifying.

If those were kittens rather than dogs, they would be just what Dolores Umbridge would hang in her office.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! MY EYES!!

I have a pair of fine art paintings (mounted on cork but with random fake brushstrokes over the whole thing, even the printed-on frame) of groups of huge-eyed cats by Miree. First I got the ballet-dancing bug-eyed cats, which impressed me so much I redrew it in black and white, like an engraving. Years later, I showed it to someone who went away and came back with a companion piece showing a cat orchestra, also signed by Miree.

Damn, I should find those and get them back on the wall. Maybe about a foot off the ground, where our cat can enjoy them.

When I was a kid, I loved these cutsie pictures.

Now I think, if any of that crap was on my dog, he would eat it all within 5 minutes.
