Cork flooring, yes. But not asphalt flooring.

Asphalt tile (http://www.floorbiz.com/tile/asphalt-tile-floors.htm); it was very common in the 20th century. Many articles caution that removing them can be dangerous because many asphalt tiles contained asbestos. (Like Kentile (http://www.asbestos.com/companies/kentile-floors.php).)

I've heard of cork, asphalt just seems..ick..I wouldn't want to walk around barefoot on that.

Hehe,
They have a cork floor in the Library at Simmons College here in Boston. We looked at it for Library. When walking on it, it has a softer feel. so your joints take less abuse.

Wait, really? I never noticed when I was there! (Then again, I spent most of my time in the various group study areas where it's all carpet, so...)

Looks like the theme of Unintentionally Gay has worked its way into the comments

I've never heard of cork or asphalt flooring either. I think I'd rather have cork than asphalt on my floor, though.

Looks like cork, but with all the comfort of your garage floor.

cork makes great flooring - soft, and it's warm in winter.

It's also really good for soundproofing.

I heard it was really good for people who have dust allergies. :B

Cork is lovely because of the softness underfoot, plus it also adds a layer of soundproofing to the room. Asphalt tiles are very hard wearing, moreso than regular linoleum tiles, and works well in a business or warehouse setting, or in basement settings because it's impermeable to water damage.

Not asphalt, but we had cork on the floor of our bathroom when I was small. It was lovely and warm

Cork is lovely: warm and insulating and attractive. You can even get it colour-washed here if you don't like the natural look.

Asphalt though? Just no.

Plenty of tile's asphalt backed. It's just not asphalt fronted, so if you weren't installing it, you shouldn't have an idea.

Flooring

Yes, have heard of both, but we're in the flooring trade. Cork floors are WONDERFUL!!! Asphalt tile is commercial tile you see in stores, hospitals etc. It's also known as VCT.

Asphalt flooring sounds like you would be having your floor paved and with 2 preteen boys in my house, this is beginning to sound like a completely reasonable option. No more vacuuming; I'll just hose things down at the end of the day.

The tiles, or the boys? :-)

Cork sounds like a nice comfy floor, but how do you keep it clean? Or is it typically covered?
