1000 sheets on a roll? Must have been pretty thin, but that's OK - presumably you could fold it as many times as necessary since it's "soft as old linen".

Yeah, you do have to wonder, if the 1 ply Scott tissue is supposed to be luxury, what they were supposedly wiping with over in old blighty. Manilla envelopes? Leaves? Sandpaper?

By the mid 70s, it had softened to the pliancy of heavy tissue paper. Not fun.

They used that stuff well into the 90s in places like schools and public toilets. It had a shiny side, which always seemed counter-productive.

Oh, our dainty American asses.

When I was in high school in the 80s we went to the UK one summer and stayed in a dorm. OMG the toilet paper was like waxed paper and I'm not even lying. That and prostitutes were a huge shock for this sheltered American teen!

EXACTLY like waxed paper! WTHeck were they thinking? Who thought that shiny paper would be a good idea?

I've lived in places with less-than-American-Standard-fluffy-clouds. And you know what? It works, your butt survives, and life goes on.

I have too and you're right, but I admit there were times I really missed the good stuff. I have allergies and I had the same problem finding good tissues. Fortunately, Kleenex is a worldwide brand and I could usually track it down somewhere.

The secret of the waxed paper loo roll is to rub it vigorously between your palms until it soften. Thankfully it is rarely found now
