Life, March 1945:

Right in your own home!

Enlarged pictures big enough for the whole family to see!  Why, that screen must be nearly a foot across!

I have to admit, that is a nice cabinet.

Flat screen! Apparently it was rear-projection done with mirrors (but not smoke).

I wonder how much that cost in today's dollars. Like I'm sure it was "only" what... $50 to $100 or so... back then, but I wonder what that would translate to now.

A TV of that size in 1945 would have been hundreds of dollars.

I found an ad for a 10 inch table top TV from 1950 for $200, and it's advertised as $70 less than the previous model.

This inflation calculator claims that would be about $1800 today, but I think it should be much more than that.

Does it accordion down into the cabinet? That's... interesting. I'm sure it was extremely durable. ;)

I'm guessing these were never put into production, but I wonder if a working prototype was ever made.

Look at the lamp and the coffee table off to the left. Is it just me or does it look like the lamp has passed through the glass and is sitting on the floor? I still want that table, though.

This is so fascinating. Though given the date, I have to wonder if this was ever put into production... though it looks like the company was involved with radar.

My dad made his own cabinet and our TV is in that. It matches the old stereo cabinet he made for Mom. :)

I've worked on some old TVs from the 40's before. I actually got to see the philco model listed here. http://www.tvhistory.tv/1940sProjectionTVp2.htm

Old guy that had it told me it weighed 500 pounds and when you bought it new they delivered the cabinet by itself. Then brought the guts of it later and installed it.
