Country Gentleman January 1942

The real fun lies in the application process.

"Caked bag" sounds pretty disgusting.

We sold this in the pet supply store I used to manage; it was great for chapped dog paws and noses. The tin looks exactly the same, but it's gone up in price just a bit.

I love the smell of bag balm.

The teat-armed burglar is a bit disconcerting.

This stuff smells horrid, but is awesome on dry feet.

I remember my mother, a farm girl, telling me about this stuff and how nursing mothers would use it on themselves. They'd get their own jar, of course! When I had my babies, I remembered that and seriously considered finding a feed store somewhere to get this stuff instead of paying the outrageous markup on Lansinoh, which is also a lanolin-based balm. I didn't know Bag Balm contained antiseptics, though.

Bag Balm is carried by many drug stores now. Growing up my folks (who both grew up in farm country) would use it on scrapes and dry feet.

After all these years, the tin still looks the same. We tend to go through a good bit of it with the horses.

I really need to buy some. It's the only thing that worked on my dry skin.

My grandpa used Udder Balm on their cows, and it's really amazing on winter skin.

Also, it took me a minute to realize that the "burglars" were dry, chapped udders, rather than hobos who were sneaking into the barn and stealing the milk.

Yup, this stuff was an old standby at every horse farm I was ever at. I keep it around the house for myself now that my old horse has retired.

My mother used to drive to the Farm & Fleet store in Kankakee, IL--a 45 minute car trip from our house--to get this stuff. To this day, she still swears by it for her chapped hands.
