I always try to watch "Wings" during TCM's Month of Oscars. It always kills me how it's supposed to take place in 1917/1918, but the fashion (clothes, make-up, &c) are so very very 1928. I mean, there are similarities between 1918 and 1928 in fashion, but I'm pretty sure that the flapper-influenced style would still get you looked at like you were crazy in 1918, whereas it was pretty standard in 1928 for fashionable and wealthy young women.
Always odd & distracting to me when moviemakers seem to have said, "Period, shmeriod..the hell with it." Check the party scene early in "In Harm's Way" that's supposed to be 1941, and check the women (Google images make it plain enough)in "The Cincinnati Kid," supposed to be in the 1930s.
Yes! It's always pretty obvious that the costumers are using contemporary fashion and giving it a "historical" flair, if they even bother doing that. The recent version of Emma, I think it was?, drove me crazy the few scenes I saw, because NONE of the women had head-coverings when outside! or if they did, it was a big floppy sun-hat, and it just as often was hanging down the woman's back. And then the Wuthering Heights with Ralph Fiennes was great for the 1994 hair the women had...
Of course, in some cases, the mixed up historicity of the costuming isn't totally random - for example, Pride and Predjudice from 1941(?) which reused costumes from Gone With the Wind in order to save money.
It's a fun movie! It's also one of the more easily accessible films from the era, mostly because it one the Best Picture award. (Thus, more people know about it so it's more likely to be available on DVD or at the library than other films from 1928 that aren't as well known.)
