Yeah, the top half is by JC Leyendecker, a phenomenally successful and prolific illustrator, a mentor to Norman Rockwell. He excelled at images of high glamour, and often homoerotic pictures, for advertising and the best magazine covers. He created the Arrow Shirt man, based on his (scheming) lover, who he often used as a model. I think this ad was in fact for a cigarette brand. Leyendecker was really something.
William Powell's character, Nick, (dang, what was his last name?) wrote the book on sloshing before breakfast, and still managed to make it look half way glamorous. I'm not surprised they would use that movie to push their gin.
While the novel was published in 1934, the 1st edition cover looks very different from the example above. This cover was from 1989, but the ad sure fits the tone of the novel and film!
The trailer for the first "The Thin Man" film showed Powell in that Hammett pose, coming out of the book in Nick Charles character. IIRC, he meets Powell, playing the detective he heretofore was best known for, Philo Vance, and the two have a conversation. Very clever.
Her eyes seem to tell a story. I imagine her staring down a female rival in a bar and thinking, "oh, no, sistah, you do not want to mess with me! I will fuck up your shit!"
