The team in the striped uniforms is an early incarnation of The Bay Area Bombers', before they got their distinctive "Bumble Bee" uniforms. . The injured skater is Wild Bill Reynolds. I believe he suffered a broken collar bone in the fall he took from an illegal block. He was a full goose boogie kamikazi on 8 wheels...sometimes stuff gets broken. The Black guy is George Copeland, He was the first black roller derby star and he was great. I believe they were up against the Chicago Westerners' in a home game at the Cow Palace. Chicago played rough. I was always a Bombers fan, Francine Cochu was altogether too cute to be so tough, and the Blonde Bomber Joanie Weston was as rough as they come, some men of opposing teams would learn to fear her wrath. Some "wrestling" type drama/hype went into the later weekly TV shows, but if they were up against a team they didn't know things got very ugly sometimes, little Midge 'Toughie' Branshuhn was one of the pioneers of the sport, and there were no phoney put on bumping, it was real. In the old days I was strictly a Bombers' fan, but if the L.A. T-Birds were up against some of the "heels", I was rooting for them. I've been lurking here, enjoying the Ads and the comments. I've wanted to sign up before but I just had to comment on one of the toughest games ever to evolve. They used to skate on hiways and battle their way across entire states, but that was when Dance Marathons and other odd entertainments found their way into the great "America's Comin Back"meme. Now I have to go down in the cellar and find some Ads' so I can play too! BTW, it's great to lurk here, everyone seems so civil I sometimes wonder if it's a "War Baby" convention. Oh yeah, and the kid on the horse in my icon is me, the horse was named Billy, he knew more tricks than I did.
