I'm really not convinced this charred looking hunk of ground beef will taste as good as steak.

Add more fat to your fatty meat! Can't you hear your arteries hardening with every glorious bite?

Spread the shortening? Give me a break! It's ground beef. Scoop out a big glob of the stuff and mix it in! And what's this broiling business? You still have a ton of shortening left, so deep fry that sucker! And don't forget to wash your greaseburger down with an ice-cold bottle of corn oil!

In an era when people cooked steaks in butter, this must have seemed like a sad disappointment.

This is ground beef. I doubt it really needed to be lubed up with shortening before you cook it. Though I kind of like the idea of a Mock Steak Loaf. (Which is what I have now officially dubbed this thing.)

it's so sad. it's much sadder than just eating meatloaf or sloppy joes somehow.

It's been a while since I ate meat, but I've never really had a problem with ground beef not being "tender." I mean, at least I've never had to cut it with a knife or anything.

How could you not want to eat meat when it looks this good? Black, shortening-coated, vaguely kidney-shaped . . . Delicious!

You've luckily never had my grandmother's ground beef patties. I'm pretty sure she cooks them for a full lunar cycle.

I'm sure it'll help the fact that the meat is charred >.>;

It looks like a smoker's lung. Gah.

No. It looks like a dissected kidney.

Eck, I don't know if I'd go for charred ground beef. The whole thing in general sounds unappetizing.

I guess Spry was the poor man's Crisco, since they advertised something this pathetic. Where's Aunt Jenny when you need her?

And I didn't know that Lever Brothers made anything besides cleaning products.

I'm glad you mentioned Aunt Jenny because Lileks devoted several pages to her. For those who haven't seen it, it's pretty awesome:

This is the stuff that was rejected as being too gross to mix with lye and make soap. (hee, at first I typed "soup"!)

Looks like char-broiled liver to me.

even aside from the ickiness of bathing it in shortening, it's kind of pathetic to shape ground beef like steak. there are plenty of delicious things you can make with ground beef that don't involve trying to masquerade it as something else...

So basically, you'd be making a giant steak-shaped hamburger slathered in vegetable shortening. Personally, I'd rather skip the shortening and make actual hamburgers.

For an appetizer, you could get out some liverwurst and serve it up like foi gras.
