REMINDERS:

vote for the contest finalists on this entry right here!! i will post the winner tuesday morning!

monday, valentine's day is a MOVIE TRAILER DAY!!! actually a movie trailer MONDAY! :) Theme is ROMANCE....movies must have romance in 'em....so you have wide berth there with the trailer types you post!!!

Two Queries

1) now, if you will indulge me and help me out here with your comments i'd appreciate it....we had such a great response to celebs in ads, we will be having this theme again....next time though we will be doing it via decade.... such 1950-1959 ads, 1960-1969, etc....

here's my query....would it be okay if we had a separate celebs in ads contest for ONLY commercials?? i know there are purists who shun the video ads, and whereas i can respect that, they ARE ads....and as someone pointed out, you can't really compare a print ad with a TV commercial.....

so...would it be okay if we had a separate contest for celebs in commercials as opposed to print ads? i don't think we'd do that via decade though....or should we?

any feedback would be appreciated!

2) also, i am undecided about next month's contest.....please help me decide:

awesome artwork in ads
you're advertising WHAT?
a particular decade of ads (like the 20s, 30s, etc)
car ads

I think celebs in commercials vs. celebs in print ads would be an excellent idea. And I think with commercials, you really can separate a lot of them out by decade. 40s-60s, where things were mostly in black and white, and you had a lot of people who now considered legends because they died before most of us were born. There are also ads like the Flintstones smoking that are hilarious because of how out dated they are.

70s to honestly early 90s, tacky and a lot of "before they were famous," embarrassing things for people that are famous and many still famous. A lot of the ads featured things are funny from a nostalgic point of view which most of the posters here would actually remember, for example William Shatner pitching a C-64.

There are a lot of potential topics you can do with just commercials, and celebrities.

I think we should have print ad contests and commercial contests, because I prefer the commercials.

What about fashion ads? Have we done that one yet?
Restaurant ads? (got a good one in mind myself)
Ads for new technology (I'd love to see commercials for this!)

I, too, like the idea of having print and commercial contests separate. I like both types, but it can be hard to compare the two.

For example, James Garner in a print ad for Polaroid doens't hold a candle to James Garner and (can't remember her name!) interacting in a tv spot. Both could be great ads, but the medium makes a difference.

I definitely say we should separate ALL contests to print and commercials... it's a little hard to judge each one against the other. Some things, like really early decade ads (like 50s and before), it wouldn't be too big a deal because there weren't very many commercials. But after the 70s or so the number blooms and overtakes the print ads.

And I think next month should be 'awesome artwork'.

I like the idea of separating the commercials with the print ads, because as mentioned, the medium can make a lot of difference when you're selling something.

I really like the "awesome artwork" idea.

I agree with having separate runs for print and video.

For a next contest, I love the "you're advertising WHAT?" idea. Then again, I joined this comm for the weird.... LOL

I think I'm here for the same reason, but I don't want to admit it! I like "you're advertising WHAT?" Maybe another idea could be "What were they thinking? Really?"

Yep, we should separate the two - video and print ads - I'm not a fan of videos so much.

I like the idea of a contest focusing on one decade.

I could sit here and think of contest ideas all day... Vacation destinations!, special bonus offers!, Dainty Female ads! (Come on, they're TONS of them)

Because you know, the Lysol ads are always popular, and that teddy bear ad got such a huge response (and deservedly so!)

I would like to see them separated as well, BUT!!!!!!! I would like to see all the winning ADs go head to head at the end of the year. Winner takes all!

I would like to see Interior Design ADs. Or Aviation. hehe

I'm relatively new here (I started visiting in November) and I was wondering what themes have already been done. I have a few ideas, but I don't want to duplicate any. Thanks.

I'm all for separating tv vs print, I don't like video posts just bc I feel like I could go to youtube and watch them any time I want (I know it's a little different w celebs but still)

Love the idea of car ads but def think that might be too broad, would be better divided up (there are just sooo many of them - I haven't even been 'stocking up' for a contest and I've got 8 in my future posts stash)

Awesome artwork & you're advertising what?! both sound like cool ideas too.

Other ideas - ads with animals (have we done that before?), liquor, war-time ads, scare tactics (you know ads that are like YOUR BABY WILL DIE or YOU WILL DIE AN OLD SPINSTER if you don't use our product)

I like the scare tactics one! This could cover everything from social alienation (feminine odor, wearing a sweatshirt at the beach because you're fat) to physical harm like the ad from a few months ago that did everything but say "YOUR WIFE WILL BE RAPED BY A NEGRO IF YOU DON'T BUY OUR TIRES!"

On the Pristeen ad, spuzzlightyear suggested feminine hygiene. If that hasn't been done, it should be. To make it less gender-biased, maybe we could make the topic "personal care" instead. That way we could squeeze in some ads for trusses. Get it? Squeeze in?
