I loathe smoking, but in those days it was kinda of a given. And I don't see much wrong with whiskey either, even if it's American whiskey ;p

I feel it's interesting to note that traditionally whiskey is seen as a manly drink and if there are women in whiskey ads at all they generally are draped around men, or giant bottles, or what have you. The neutral way in which Bette is presented here is actually pretty enlightened.

I think you have a good point, too. If I was teaching a Women's Studies course, I would definitely use this ad in a discussion.

Also, it's nice to see an older actress who is'nt selling "old lady" stuff like Poise pads or bathtubs with doors.
