Guess you're SOL if you have an unpopular skin-tone.

Yep. Like "Negro."

On another note, if I wore those things, I would be hiking them up constantly. I just know it.

They came in non-skin colours? When was this? It looks like 50s or earlier, and I thought it was only ever natural colours then. They also seem to be staying up without those suspender things I thought they always needed which is pretty impressive. Maybe the white stripes were elastic?

they may be stay-ups. they make them with the silicone at the tops now, its sort of elastic and adheres a bit to the skin so they dont slip down. i like them.

They sound comfortable! I thought those were fairly recent though? Wasn't it all suspenders till they came up with pantyhose?

stockings with elastic have been around a long time, but until the silicone came in the stay-ups were sort of iffy, and having suspenders (a garter belt in the US) was a good idea as a back-up.

pantyhose came about from actors who got used to tights (generally a thicker knit than pantyhose) and wanted the freedom from suspenders *all* the time. personally, i hate the feeling of pantyhose, i dont think my skin gets to breathe enough while wearing them.

This was my thought too - and iirc, seam-free stockings were unpopular back then as you looked like you weren't wearing stockings and therefore looked 'common'!

Aha, yes! I remember seeing a film set in WW2 where women were drawing fake seams down the backs of each others' legs with eyebrow pencil so they looked as if they were wearing "nylons". :-)

No, but it was English too; maybe "A Private Function"? I should really get round to seeing "Hope and Glory".

Colored tights have been popular since at least the 1930s, probably because synthetic dyes were good and cheap by then. I read some sort of school journal assignment some young woman wrote in high school around then about wanting red tights, because you could wear white or red (school colors) with their uniform.

Tights (much thicker than stockings), yeah. I think they've been around for ages. I just didn't think they had coloured sheer nylons.

I love coloured tights.

There's a bit of business in the play The Skin of our Teeth (1942) where young Gladys Antrobus bursts into tears because her mother disapproves of her red stockings.

Who else, when they first saw the words "Action Fresh," a flower, and a young, carefree looking woman thought "feminine hygiene ad"?

Popular skin-tones! Don't you hate it when you walk into a room, feelin' all pretty, and someone else is wearing the exact same skin-tone? It's so embarrassing.
