I love when they start cracking up; it reminds me of when they used to show the Carol Burnett dress rehearsals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qqE_WmagjY).
He has it far better than a lot of people in the 70s, that's for sure. And if he wanted to go to college that badly, why didn't he apply for scholarships, grants, or (hate to say it nowadays, but) student loans? Hell, if his dad didn't leave them much after he died, he almost certainly qualified for a Pell Grant. And he obviously has a job, so why can't he work his way through college?
This ad sort of play and preys upon class anxieties- as if Travolta's remaining working class were a tragedy.
So he gets angry at his dead working-class father. For not providing him with college money. So the insurance company can guit-trip working-class fathers to pony up more money to them.
It's sort of sad how far we've fallen that today we're amazed anyone has any fucking job at all. Upward mobility once seemed really within reach. Travolta's character is bitter, but where would he be today, complaining that Daddy died without sending him to college so he has to work a shit job? Yeah, it sucks, but try being working class now. Hard to feel sympathy, but seems like another world that that's the worst that could happen.

and then
3) Lazy bastard. I had less money than this schmuck and I went to college. It's called student loans, scholarships, grants, and a job.
4) since when does a college education mean you won't be on your feet all day?
OH so much wrong with this commercial!
