That's the same marketing strategy used when computers first came out. Only I don't think View-master ever branched out and produced X-rated reels.

I wish these were the ones I had as a kid. My parents picked us some horrifying fairy tales ones, there was "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and a couple others. "Wizard of Oz," I think... The pictures looked like they were made of clay, and oh my god:

I would LOVE to have those sets, or at least see what the images looked like. Hey, this was pretty much the best there was as far as multimedia educational materials went. This and super-boring film strips.

I also like that they used "War between the States," not "Civil War" (if it's civil, it ain't a war) and would be really interested in reading the commentary about it. Of course, "War of Yankee Agression" is what folks in my neck of the woods calls it!

I've never seen a ViewMaster that color before; I've only seen red ones. I remember have a Snoopy reel!

I loved my View Master! My favorite reels were a Scooby Doo one and one about historical sites in the world. I need to check in to see what reels are available. I still have my second generation View Master...much more sleek than my original (which I got in 1975 for my fifth birthday). I think my son would appreciate it.

I have a peculiar eyesight that prevents me from seeing pictures in stereo. I didn't know that as a kid, so I used to pretend seeing them. Peer pressure, much?

My friend had discs that presented Holland, but the one with Superman the Movie was much better :)

Since Parade is published on Sundays, a check of the calendar reveals a few possibilities. It's further narrowed down by the reference to "50 states" and a zip code listing. I'm going to guess it's from 1966, since the next time Sept. 25 fell on a Sunday was 1977, and by then interest in View-Master was waning.
