My mom's parents' house had one of those. It was a cookie cutter house, and most of the places on the block had them. I always thought it was kind of silly. They put the dishwasher under it and that meant that you couldn't set anything down on the dishwasher. Also you had to have all this insulation around it IN YOUR WALL and... you couldn't access the sides of it... in case it caught on fire. I'm always worried about things catching on fire... Maybe they were surrounded with asbestos? Also the cooktop was just on a counter somewhere, which meant the cupboards below it were ALSO receiving unnecessary heat. Also the back of the oven backed up to my grandparents' closet, which was weird. They're both contained in the soffet above the basement stairs. I suppose it's not THAT strange of a design for a house but it SEEMS like it when I think about it.
Yep. It's one of those ideas that sounds good on paper, but isn't so great IRL. And those electric burners... man, get any food or ANYTHING, for that matter, on them... stink up the whole house unless you get every little bit off!
And we won't talk about setting the smoke detectors off.
My parents house have one of those wall ovens also. Ours though didnt' open down like that one did...It had a door that opened up...kinda like that car from Back to the Future hahahha!
"Holiday for Strings" was in its big period of popularity in late 40's, when everybody and his brother was performing it, so in order for people to get the joke (see the little musical notes?) I lean toward early 50's as well.
