and i love how it's placed in front of the fireplace!! though it probably warmed the room better than the fireplace....

It almost certainly did, and they did that to take advantage of existing chimneys. My grandmother had something like this going on in her house.

Probably it vented through the existing chimney, and yep on being more efficient as far as combustion of fuel and heating the space. That's a beautiful ad. :)

Yes…

I lived in a place where the fireplace was blocked by a gas-fired heating unit like this one.

That thing looks like a great piece of kit. I wonder if any survive?

That is a gorgeous ad. I need to look up "base burner..." because I'm intrigued. What is it, exactly... is it a woodburning stove or gas, or the like? What is the girl holding in her hand?

I also think one of those would be awesome to have. We had a woodburning stove with a decorative door that was glass and the black metal the stove was made out of... I hesitate to say iron, because I'm not sure if that's what it was. It was awesome, though, and I really miss it even though it was inefficient as all get-out and dusty too lol.

Okay I just looked it up and apparently it refers to the design; wheras the fuel (coal, for example) would be held in a "base" and burned therein. :)

This is a pretty ad, and I'm sure it did heat better than the fireplace. I never found fireplaces extremely effective.

I want that! My fireplace just sucks [I could stop the sentence here] the heat out of my house. I think it's really pretty, too, but it would take up floor space.

Pretty ad, too!

Lovely! I saw several of those in Stuhr Museum in NE. Big, beautiful monsters of cast iron and soapstone (the better to contain heat) and I wanted one sooooo badly. Still do!

Girlfriend is about to jump up and down screaming as she burned her hand. That's what you get for burning up your report card.
