I'd say this is a surefire way to get your house teepeed and egged, but given that back then most kids cereals were essentially sugar, it's like giving out boxes of candy goodness.

I've definitely eaten frosted flakes like candy. And now I have a craving for over-sweetened cereal.

The main one SO looks like the kid from Jerry McGuire.

I remember getting these as a kid... some kids got their asses kicked for these (and when their parents came out to break it up, THEY got THEIR asses kicked).

Are Sugar Smacks sold anymore - if not, I think the clown is the explanation.

Can't call them "Sugar" anymore. They swapped out the clown for the frog years ago, and eventually changed the name to "Honey Smacks".

Much as I dislike what they've done to Dig'Em over the years, he's still better than that creepy clown on the box in the ad.

That wasn't the only clown used in cereal advertising. The now-defunct Rice Krinkles from Post used one; in fact, the cereal's slogan was "More fun than a circus!" (For part of 1954, Post sponsored the classic "Gunsmoke" radio show -- where William Conrad voiced Marshall Dillon -- and it was weird to hear the announcer do family-oriented commercials for Rice Krinkles and Post Toasties during a radio show clearly geared for adults.)

And Quick Draw McGraw did a shift on the box and TV-pitching Sugar Smacks in the 60s.

See, now I'd probably actually buy the cereal if Quickdraw and/or Baba Louie were still on the box.

Heck, I suggested "McGraw" when the stables where I work/ride on Sundays got a new grey horse and was considering renaming him. The barn owner decided to stick with his name of "Hamilton" though.

I ain't gettin' on no Hamilton. "Hamilton" is a horse for brushed-boot prep-monkeys and boney, stiff-chinned Bryn Mawr bores. Or "Hamilton" is a name for a valet. Although I wouldn't wanna, y'know, assume or generalize.

Sugar. Smack. Creepy clown. It was the perfect kid's food! Why did the change it? But they are still an integral part of American culture. The plot of an episode of Family Guy was built around Mayor West's obsession with Dig 'Em.

I think I got one of these mini boxes of cereal in my trick or treat bag one year...if I remember correctly, it was Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
