It's a really interesting ad. Early Silicon Valley iconoclasm- bringing a dog to work, why I never! But he's apparently up at 3am or something- no slacker hippie he! "I'll be home for breakfast." Lol, wut? You just got there.
Interesting how the ad appeals to the aspirations of the people they are trying to sell to. Costner's character has a spacious office, he's technologically adept, he sets his own time and makes his own rules. A dog in the office! You would have to be pretty affluent to afford this machine, portraying it as the essential too of a CEO makes sense. You sell people the dream of what they want to be, not the reality of what they are.
Sheerly guessing, but just from the photography I'd bet this as was done by Adrian Lyne (Flashdance, Fatal Attraction). Besides the look, he uses dogs in a similar way in those films, observing the characters.
Bringing your dog to work was a popular trend in some workplace environments back in the eighties. So was sleeping under your desk because you never went home--especially at Apple. Lots of perks, but you were expected to work hard.
Wow! You have a great eye. IMDb indicates that Lyne did direct the Apple commercial.
