I had this sort of thing inflicted on me frequently as a child. It's why I have serious issues with food and social eating now, 40+ years later.
The worst part? At least we had a housekeeper/cook who was excellent, she was with us until 1970. After that, my mother cooked. She never met anything she didn't ruin. So, an hours' worth of brittle loathing and tension AND bad food.
