I was just reminded on Facebook that there is a confusion about some candy names - in particular, Smarties. I think in the States, Smarties are what we call Rockets in Canada. Our Smarties are more like M&Ms (which we also have - ah, Canada - the land of chocolate.)

Pretty catchy ditty, eh?

When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly?
Or crunch them very fast?
It's a candy-coated chocolate,
So tell me when I ask!
When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?

Oh my god I haven't heard that jingle in years! I remember that commercial so well!

And now I'm confusing my husband by singing the song. Teehee~ He's not Canadian so he's never heard it before! XD

I could answer all of those, and I'm American! Grew up on the border. Yay CBC! And nowwww that jingle is back in my head. GREAT.

It's a cute little jingle. They do remind me of M&Ms. Do the colors of Canadian Smarties taste different?

If they're like British Smarties, the candy shell tastes sweeter than an M&M, but they all taste alike.

As a kid, relatives from N. Ireland would bring us huge boxes of wonderful British candies all the time. (OH Crunchies!). Smarties came in a cardboard tube, they were bigger and flatter than M&M's, and did not taste the same. Smarties are more like "pastilles". Objectively tastier, finer candy/chocolate, but not much in common taste-wise with waxy Yank "milk chocolate"(a legal term!) plus all those lovely chemical dyes. USA!

Now I want a Crunchie, badly.

I don't think the different colours represent different flavours, but I personally prefer M&M's d:

American Smarties are really Rockets? Like, those little candies that can be crushed into a powder that my elementary friends snorted?

Aussie could answer that as well! Same Smarties and same old jingle. Ours were made by Nestle, which I think later amalgamated with Rowntree.

Did you guys have Milky Bars? They had a brilliant old commercial.

Oh man, I am definitely going to have that song stuck in my head all day. :D Good thing we got the huge Hallowe'en box of mini Smarties/KitKat/Coffee Crisp/Aero so I can take some to work. Yeah, that's right, they aren't for Trick or Treaters. They're for me to take a few each day to my regular adult job. And we're on our second box!

ETA: Also, I feel the need to protest the comparison to M&Ms. I think that might confuse people into thinking they're the same when they're totally not. Smarties are bigger and sweeter. M&Ms, while purporting to be Milk Chocolate, taste almost semi-sweet when compared to delicious wonderful Smarties. (I did a school project on the differences when I was a kid, and pitted the two against eachother. Smarties won!)

We have smarties in Denmark too - M&M's began showing up maybe 10 years ago? The smarties have changed colour last I saw them - they have natural colours now, so no more bright blue smarties :(
