Honest question- it seems from tons and tons of pictures I've seen for years, it seems like covering up the navel was considered "decent" or something, until the 60's or so. Standards of modesty for women then I can sort of understand, but any picture or ad or movie with a shirtless man before 1960, the belly-button is always covered. It's a sort of old-fashioned modesty I've never really understood. The psychology of it.
