in the second....I wanted SOOOOO bad to go to Expo 67 - we got a gold coin and some other crap - oh flags with the logo on them and a pin with the logo on a maple leaf - coz we never got to go.....

*sigh*

The more things change, the more they remain the same - just replace 'Communism' with 'Liberalism'.

What is most scary is that "the right" would simply yield all our individual rights and freedoms to rapacious multinational corporations under the pseudo-religion of "free markets". Just listen to the kooks on Fox News and you'll hear it every bleepin' minute.

This! I live in Wyoming (red state through and through, and we've got a high percentage of tea-baggers) and any form of not-conservative-republicanism and/or liberalism and/or dissent is treated with a great big socialism freak out.

Not all Republicans or tea-baggers are like this, but it's definitely a trend.

Socialism is the boogeyman and keeps any meaningful change or discourse from happening, IMHO. "Hey, what about adjusting our health care system?" "SOCIALISM!! DON'T TREAD ON MEEEE!"

*Liberal I am, but I lean more towards Democratic Socialism^.^

No, that's so 90's. Replace it with Marxist-Nazi-Leninist-Kenyan-Socialist.

It's all very well to simper and giggle. but it's remarkable how well that first paragraph describes modern-day victims of American public “education.” And properly so, in the eyes of those who have caused it. Devoid of moral responsibility - ignorant of history… “Homeschooling” became a still-growing mass movement for a reason.

If public school students are ignorant of history (which is not remotely the same thing as "intellectual honesty," which is what the ad says) it's because of the Religious Right trying to rewrite history (to say nothing of science, and a slew of other subjects) via the Texas School Board's textbook shenanigans (among others), not some victimizing indoctrination program. Homeschooling CAN be an excellent experience. In reality, it often isn't, with curricula like A-Beka and many, many others failing to give students basic levels of education in sciences and history.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I needed to comment on this. If you want to continue the discussion, feel free to do so on my LJ, as this is not the place.

Yes! Thank you for commenting about this. I've got plenty of issues regarding public school education, but have never been able to really articulate it well. You did, and I applaud your off-topicness (it's a word now^.^).

That Expo 67 ad is very famous. It was ultimately responsible for a great many visitors from The States. At Expo 86 in Vancouver, they had the next-to-last Soviet Pavilion.

I wonder how many Americans would have gone to Shanghai's Expo 2010 this year if they knew there was a North Korea Pavilion.

(I run the site http://www.ExpoMuseum.com incidentally)

So the Soviets built a model of Dulles Airport in Montreal, five years after the original opened in DC?

I wish I had seen this when it was posted last weekend while I was in Montréal, driving around the old Expo sites!
