Phil A. O'Fish - 1976 McDonald's

I think he's cute, wonder why he never caught on..

Interesting, Phil A. is not nearly as weird as, say, Mayor McCheese. I suspect he never caught on because the Filet-o-Fish itself has always had third tier status. I don't eat fast food much anymore, but when I did, that was my favorite at McD's, and I always got shit from my friends about it.

Ditto - it's the only thing there I would eat apart from puddings and fries.

Charlie Tuna outclassed him.

The crown of that bun looks like the mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion.

Mickey D's filet-o-fish sandwiches are terrible now. I don't know what happened to them. I prefer Burger Kings fish sanwiches.

Aw, too bad! I haven't had one in years, but I used to love them when I was in college. One of my mainstays.

The bread is dry, the fish is dry, and they don't put enough tarter sauce.

Now BK's fish sandwiches are bigger, juicer, tastier, and they put enough tarter sauce. You also get the option of putting cheese on it, and I do. The thing is I rarely ever go to BK. But when I do, that's the only thing I order. I probably go like every two years or so if that. lol

I won't eat fish, but somehow, these never seemed like actual "fish" to me, if that makes sense. All the tartar sauce, the cheese, the fact that I never, ever found a fishbone in one... not like a big nasty slab of salmon or cod or tilapia!

I'm sad the Filet-o-Fish has changed so!

I concur this; I can still imagine how they used to taste. I have a ton of food allergies, and now I can't eat them without resulting stomach pains. They leave a terrible aftertaste in your mouth, too.

I forgot about the aftertaste. *shudders*

I'm always suspicious when they advertise anything as "surprisingly" good. . .

I'm all, "Wait, was I supposed to think it wasn't going to be good? Am I going into this with the wrong sort of expectations?"

I know. It makes me think "so, what do you think of your fillet o' fish?" "this? oh it's surprising...ly... good..." *shifty eyes*

Well, for me, quizlings that are what they're promoting come across as saying "eat my family!". Kind of a turn-off, and it's probably for the best that I have no memory of Phil. He even has a ready net to help you snap up the other fish that he doesn't like.

I loved filet-o-fish as a kid (no cheese, though - that was crazy talk) but I lost all desire for any kind of seafood somewhere around 14. Gourmet or fishsticks, I just want nothing to do with it.

But, I thought Captain Crook was the filet O fish character?
Still not as scary as the "Uncle O'Grimacey" character they had for the st patty's day shakes though...

Growing up in Northern California, I always thought it was the Vallejo (http://www.ci.vallejo.ca.us/GovSite/) Fish Sandwich. Finding out the real name was the big surprise for me.

Because it's creepy that a fish wants you to eat his fish kin?

The Filet-O-Fish sandwich was actually a late introduction and definitely not Ray Kroc's choice. In the early days, the menu at McDonald's was limited to hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, shakes, coffee, and soft drinks. Understandably, in those pre-Vatican II days sales in some areas dropped off sharply on Fridays and during Lent. (I think it was George Carlin who pointed out that there are still people in Hell doing time on a meat rap.)

One restaurant manager worked out the idea of a very simple fish sandwich: a minced-fish patty, fried and served on a bun. Kroc, who was a far better entrepreneur than foodist, rejected this idea out of hand based on the notion that fish necessarily and inevitably smelled bad. As an alternative, he suggested the "Hula Burger" -- a ring of canned pineapple heated on the grill, covered with cheese and served on a bun.

The store manager who'd come up with the fish idea suggested a cook-off: which sold better on a Friday in a Catholic neighborhood, the Filet-O-Fish or the Hula Burger?

You will note that only one of those options is on the McDonald's menu today.
