So...as my mom tells it (I was too young to remember) this commercial would make me cry. Full-out cry big crocodile tears.

And while I can agree with you, to some extent, I guess my nostalgia is more of a "if I knew then what I know now...", since I was not even 5 years old.

Aaaaaand the circle goes 'round....

(Yes, they were. Very ugly.)

There were ugly things, but we did things about them, or at least we tried.

We didn't put an end to racial discrimination, but we made it illegal. Where's the outrage today over Faux News forcing an innocent woman from her job?

We forced an evil, corrupt, Attorney General, Vice President, and President from office. Where's the justice today for an administration that lied, tortured, and caused the worst economic collapse in 80 years?

We marched in the streets and stopped an illegal, pointless, war that killed 50,000
of our own people, and countless others. Why aren't people in the streets demanding the same thing today?

Lightning Rose, born in 1953 and proud of every sign she carried, and every song she sang.

I remember the song, but I remember it as a Christmas commercial. Everyone was standing so that they were in the shape of a Christmas tree, and they were all holding candles.

And I was only wee at the time, too, so it had no underlying ugliness attached to it.

Exactly. There's really not a lot of world ugliness when you're not even 5. =)

Um.....what's the underlying 'ugliness'?

A couple of people above were talking about the general state of the world at the time this ad was shot, and how it [for them] precluded any sort of gentle feelings or nostalgia. Since I was very small when I saw the ad, I didn't experience it in the same way.

Ah!
Yes. Okay. And yes, i'm the same - i was born in '67, and though i *do*, just barely, remember footage from Vietnam on tv, my childhood was pretty carefree and untouched by social ills.

They should have a reunion of those people. I'd like to see what they look like now.

Ooh! Ooh! Me!! I do, I do!! I used to LOVE this one! Do you know the exact year this was made? I was born in '72 and want to think I was only about 6 or 7 but I could have been a little older.

Me!

Considering this, and the fact this was the general, if outward, view of society in the 70s, it still kind of amazes me that we're not currently as far along with the whole 'love and brotherhood' thing I'd been led to believe was happening back then.

I'd never thought of it that way, but that's spot on.

Unfortunately, I know all the words. As I recall, it was an adaptation of "I'd like to teach the world to sing," which originally had nothing at all to do with Coca-Cola.

Pretty progressive that they had all those ethnic people in the commercial.

ISTR that it was the other way 'round. The song coming out of the commercial.

I do remember that my grandmother got the song on a 45RPM single, and played it often.
