Salted melon is super delicious... It is also a regional taste and something that older people used to do more. My old baby sitter would salt melons of all varieties.
It was always an option when I was growing up (in South Louisiana), but I inevitably put too much salt and then didn't like it. The older people were more likely to salt their melon than the kids.
It's just that, with all of today's health concerns, it just seems wrong to promote eating anything with salt. Does Morton still advertise like this today?
Salted watermelon sounds weird, but it does taste good with a little salt. Street vendors in L.A. sell little containers of sliced watermelon, cucumber and mango with lemon, salt and chili powder. I made some at home the other day - a nice snack on a summer afternoon. :)
Just being an interloper here...but this (http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/20/how-do-you-eat-watermelons/?scp=1&sq=watermelon&st=cse) in the NYT has a lot of ideas. And there is a grilled tomato and watermelon salad (http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/05/the-temporary-vegetarian-grilled-watermelon-and-tomato-salad/?scp=3&sq=watermelon&st=cse)
In downtown LA, they holler "Mango! Mango! Mango! Sandia! Sandia! Pepino! Pepino!" etc as they walk with their carts, so they're easier to find than, say, the bacon-wrapped-hotdog vendors. They're always in the fabric district, at least.
True. You can always find at least one fruit vendor downtown. If not, it's just as easy to go to the market, buy your own fruit and cucumber, and prepare some at home. Same with the bacon-wrapped hot dogs - at least you know you're not going to get sick from eating street food, something my mom always warns me about when we go to the garment district and I start swooning as I smell the bacon dogs. (drool)
I was reading in he NYT about how people like to eat watermelon (http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/20/how-do-you-eat-watermelons/?scp=1&sq=watermelon&st=cse), and outside of just the tradional, sliced way, or as a refreshing cocktail, a lot of people eat it with feta cheese. Interesting, I know! I had never thought of it, but yeah, having lived in the south for a while now, I know they salt their melon so, this would be the same idea.
If you do add salt, people, watermelon needs just a little PINCH. Just enough to give the surface juice a little kick. Any more and you'll gag like a chicken.
This doesn't surprise me. My mom and her mother both put salt on grapefruit, which isn't QUITE the same thing, but I'm sure it's for the same purpose (to bring out the sweetness).
This is a cute ad. I always thought it was weird that people salted their melons, but I saw on "Good Eats" that salt actually brings out the sweetness of foods. Very interesting.
Never salted a melon (I don't eat very many anyway) but I did put a pinch or two of salt on a rather bland strawberry shortcake once. Made it SO much better.
Also put salt in hot cocoa (again, just a pinch or two), and in those little individual microwave cake thingies that, like, Betty Crocker has, before I put the water in and put it in the microwave. Both of those are too bland to me otherwise.
