[Note: This model of Edsel had the famous "vagina" grille; although the 1960 Edsel was different in appearance, nothing could save its damaged reputation, and 1960 was its last year of production.

1959 EDSEL

Edsel Corsair 4-door hardtop and Villager station wagon

Makes history by making sense

Try it out for size—spirit—and sense!

The car that makes sense is here—and you should drive it!

You'll find real six-passenger room inside—but less length outside. It's much easier to park than long, stretched-out cars. And you'll like Edsel's road-hugging ride and beautiful balance. It's taken off pounds of useless weight—is much easier to handle than bluky, overweight cars.

You'll also find Edsel gives you plenty of performance without hogging gas. Edsel's four new high-efficiency engines include a thrifty six with a powerful test-track record. And an eager new kind of V-8 that gives you real power on regular gas! Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

So does Edsel's new price. It's now priced with the most popular three—Ford, Plymouth and Chevrolet! For size and spirit—try the car that makes sense!

I keep getting the feeling they're trying to tell me something... but I can't quite make sense of it.

The more typical term for the grill is the "horse collar."

My first car, which I never actually got to drive, was a salmon-pink 1959 Edsel. The thing was a TANK. My dad gave it to me and promptly refused to let me take driver's ed for the next 2 years until he could find a car he wasn't worried about me damaging (a 1961 Rambler).

In the questionable joy of growing up with Edsel-obsessed parents, one highlight was riding on the Indianapolis 500 Speedway in an vintage Edsel. I'm only sorry I wasn't old enough to drive it.

I remember an old man friend of my grandfather's that used to call them "Ethel" because of that grille.

Ah, the Edsel. My dad graduated from Edsel Ford high school many, many moons ago.
