1943 Flit insecticide. Dr. Seuss did illustrations for Flit before he became Dr. Seuss. I don't know if he illustrated the first ad. I have no doubt about the one below, though, drawn six years later.
i got a book, somewhere!, from i believe the late 30s or early 40s, a little paperwork and it's called something like 'pocket book of boners'....i kid you not....i bought it for the title! but it's filled with drawings by theodore geisel...
My parents remembered these ads! They said the artwork was fantastic and VERY funny! I have to believe it, because for my dad to remember something like an ad (especially for something like fly spray), it'd have to be really out of the ordinary. :)
Poking around further, I can see why your dad would remember them! Color Flit ad - clearly Theodore Geisel! (http://www.terramaja.nl/uploaded_files/1Flit%20reclame%20.jpg)
A few years back, I was holed up in a closet at the library at William & Mary, photocopying out all the political cartoons by "Dr. Seuss" in PM. It took a month or two of weekend and evening work, but I was glad to have pretty much all of them. Then a couple of years later, someone put out a book of them.
I have the book of Boners. I used to have the hardback, which was three books in one, but stupidly let it go when I was moving over and over.
