From Spain, 1960s (And remember that machism comes from "macho", the Spanish word for "male)

(It's actually a repost with an improved version)

My own translation of the words in the ad:

WOMAN: I need your help. I need to check with you a terrible problem. It's about my husband. His modd worsens every day. Our home has become a real hell. He's always irritated and he spends days without addressing a word to me. Sometimes he has anger attacks. When he speaks to me, it's always shouting and with bad words. He never kisses me goodbye.
GIPSY WOMAN: Well, don't tell me anymore! Have you ever thought that your husband works long hours and has the right to get a warm greeting when he gets home? Check this and make sure he always gets his glass of Soberano brandy. You'll see how this works
SPEAKER: Have a glass of Soberano every time you wish to taste a good brandy (cognac). Soberano by González Byass

Holy cats. He smacked her!

I hope the rest of the fortune teller's advice was 'slip a sleeping pill in the brandy and get the hell out of that house while's he's unconscious.'

Please remember that this was television advertising in a fascist dictatorship.

As were Mussolini's and Salazar's.

Oh, I hadn't made that connection. Makes it seriously, seriously disturbing, doesn't it?

I learnt to read and write Spanish as a child from a school primer sent to me by my grandmother. Among the things that I learnt was that the Spanish Civil War started because General Franco was saddened that Spanish schoolchildren didn't have crucifixes in their classrooms.

Yup. Give an already angry man hard booze-they'll help calm him. *eyeroll*

Remember girls, if your husband is abusive it's all your fault for not being nicer to him!

And not giving him alcohol to loosen his missing inhibitions!

Yes, there is so much wrong with this!

Because alcohol is an effective treatment for domestic violence . . .

As my mother pointed out (when I used "flaco" instead of "delgado" for thin in conversation with her) "macho" means male in Spain sólo cuando se refiere a los animales.

That's really interesting! I can't believe I never picked up on that lol A missionary I worked with in Honduras used "macho" to refer to humans, but from what I could gather, he used it to mean a brute or cad. He gave this talk to a bunch of pre-teen and teenage boys about respecting girls and women... It was a great, but all I really remember is "do you want to be macho? NO! You want to be real men!"

Depends where you are. There are a lot of Spanishes. “Muy macho” can mean “very manly”, but “macho” and “hembra” (its female counterpart) refer normally to male and female animals. Still, my mother’s first Spanish ID card (issued way, way back in the days of Franco) indicated that her sex is “hembra” (i.e., female) which in most of Latin America would cause eyebrows to go up.

Yes. Ugh. I love Spain, but I'm glad I never visited in the bad old days.
