When was this? I was interested enough to look up when instant coffee came in. It was invented in 1901 and G Washington marketed it commercially in 1910. Nescafe was launched in 1938, so I wonder when this ad was from. Late 30s or 40s going by her hair?
I wouldn't say it was a counterpart, because the of the automatic implication that making coffee is a kitchen-y thing, and that's all girly stuff that a man won't touch. It's more of a demonstration of the fact that perpetuating stereotypes has just plain negative effects all around.
Well, the notion that men are completely incompetent when it comes to any domestic task not involving heavy machinery is a useful justification for men getting out of doing housework and leaving it all to their wives. It's not that they don't want to help with that PITA washing tub, ladies, it's just that they can't, on account of men's brains not being wired for taking care of themselves.
Seriously, these "even a man can make it" ads for coffee baffle me more than anything else. If you can't even manage to figure out coffee, how do you manage to get dressed in the morning?
It really wasn't - it always came down to some version of pot plus water plus ground coffee. Maybe the grinding was a bit of a pain, but that's it.
My Mom had a coffee percolator that she rarely used. She (or Dad) would just put water in a pot, sprinkle ground coffee on top, then bring it to a boil and turn it down to keep it warm. It was pretty good too, just don't drink the last drop because it might be crunchy.
Pretty sure drip brewers and percolators were around then, but even without those, I've made coffee just by boiling water and milk and coffee grounds in a pot before, and that's barely any harder. Hardest part is pouring it through a strainer without spilling anything.
I find it difficult to comprehend why society believes that men are missing a whole section of their brain to do with "girl things" and women are missing the "man things" section.
It's like when Homer's listening to Flanders talk about apple cider and his brain leaves.
I'm wondering how coffee even existed before the instant mixes. Women's coffee is eternally stale and awful. Men's incompetence in all things culinary constantly stands in their way. Did restaurants employ shaman and alchemists to miracle coffee into being, just to taunt the mortals with a beverage they would never be able to duplicate on their own?

My dad, whom I love dearly, can barely boil water but I'm pretty sure he can make coffee.
