I think maybe the 'charcoal seasoning' is supposed to make food grilled in the kitchen taste like it was char-grilled on a barbecue. I'd like to have a good spice rack one day - but I'd need a more spacious kitchen for it not to feel like clutter, so I'll try to get that first.
I bet charcoal seasoning is akin to liquid smoke, which is something I can't live without- and contrary to popular belief, there is nothing unhealthy, artificial, or carcinogenic about it.
And MSG... mmmm. Let's just say, I'm glad I'm not allergic to it, because that stuff is addictive.
So, erm, does anyone know when McCormick's changed the bottles/labels away from these?
Because all my spices happened to be courtesy of my roommate's deceased grandmother. And my spice rack looked exactly like that ad, with the exception of charcoal seasoning, season all and red pepper flakes.
I cannot afford McCormick seasonings. Saw them out here, picked up a bottle to inspect, saw the price, had a near heart attack, put it back and wheeled like a bat out of hell from the spice aisle.
I'm sure they're great, but maybe when I'm rolling in money.
The trick to spices is to buy them at Asian food stores, especially things like curry powder. You can get good deals at dollar stores or by drying your own.
Season all is just some universal stuff that can be used on anything, similar to, but not the same as All Spice.
I have not read any of the sub-replies because I am in work, but no one seems to remember that the point about charcoal is that it stops you farting! Old people and dogs in the first half of last century were constantly eating charcoal biscuits for this reason (the black ones in Spiller's Shapes).
I like MSG, I think it's nicer than salt. No way you can get it in England? But yes, it does seem to give some people headaches when they eat lots of Chinese food...
