No whalebone? Finally, a corset for Hayden Panettiere!

I think by the 1880s, steel was well on the way to replacing whalebone in corsets.

I'm looking at the design there, and it does look as if it's narrow strips of cork, so I'm wondering how it didn't just split apart.

Why would any physician recommend any type of corset? xD

Back then there was a lot of a debate surrounding corsets in the medical field (and society in general), and some doctors believed that wearing corsets was good for women. I can't remember their reasoning, but I imagine it had something to do with the benefits of maintaining a good posture :P

I think it's like ads where doctors recommend cigarettes or baby formula, I cam only assume money changer hands, or the doctors were totally made up.

i'm sure others could tell you better than i, but a real, custom-made corset can actually help people with back problems if it is correctly designed. if it's anything like the one pictured, though ...probably not so much.

These super old ads are really awesome. I wonder how far back this archive goes...
