Question: Where do people get old magazines anymore? I don't see them in thrift shops or garage sales like I once did. Maybe Estate Sales are a better bet? This ad came from a book about World War One.

Observation for Mods: If you want a physical prize for the barf food contest, have you considered sending the winner several boxes of Lime Jello? Then they could create their own wonderful dishes at home. And it's gotta be ~Lime~ - I'm just sayin'.

Oh, not to worry, it just contains a ~little~ sulfuric acid. Whew.

And, of course, a little quinine is very important because malaria is positively rampant in Britain - little known fact!

... Well, alcohol is a step above heroin as a "tonic", I suppose. Quinine and Sulfuric Acid don't actually have any real 'soothing' effects, do they?

You're right - Laudanum certainly would be the additive of choice in this case but it was doubtless illegal or something by this time.

I do know that you could buy laudanum in drugstores in Britain, even as late as the 1930s - but you had to inform the druggist what it was for - so I'm not entirely sure what the legal status was. People did know it was addictive by this point.
