I really fail to see the 'fail' in this ad since Ayds was on the market a decade or more before the onset of AIDS.

On the market since 1946 actually. I agree on the "fail" logo. I just put it up due to its comedic, (unintentional, of course) value.

I remember seeing magazine ads for Ayds when I was a kid.

I remember those too -- all personal-testimonial ads, with the byline "By _____ as told to Ruth L. McCarthy". I remember one -- it was reprinted in a book -- that chronicled the dieter's proud achievement of getting down to a size 14. Today such an ad would have to begin, "Oh how I hated myself and my body back when I was a gross/horrible/disgusting size 14!"
