There were some very strange ideas early on about proper procedure for viewing the TV in order not to injure your eyes. Magazines published serious articles about how far from the set you should sit, and whether it was acceptable to have other light sources in the room. Special viewing glasses don't seem too far fetched for the time!
A group of Japanese men once attempted to play soccer while wearing glasses like these. It was funny watching them constantly miss the ball and fall over when they tried to kick it.
