From 1986: Cal Worthington and his dog, Spot -- although in this case, "Spot" is a seal! I used to see these ads on late-night TV all the time.

No, not in California; in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada! We got most of TV stations from Seattle, and I think good ol' Cal was on up and down the west coast. He has dealerships in Alaska, too.

I used to record Doctor Who late at night from a Bellingham TV station, and that's probably where I saw the commercials.

Hahahaha, my husband groaned and turned up the TV as soon as I started playing this. He was born in southern California and remembers this guy's ads very well, and claims that Cal followed him and his family after they moved to Sacramento.

How many different iterations of his dog Spot were there? The one that stands out in my memory was the giant scorpion (in what had to have been an intentionally laughably bad matte job).

His family actually lived in Houston. I went to school with and was friends with his daughter.
