They come in four styles with hostesses to match: Italian (see toga), French (see gold mini), Olde English (see wench).

I think those are paper dresses the stewardesses are wearing. They were on an episode of Antiques Roadshow recently.

I happen to like British food. But it doesn't have the best of reputations; certainly it didn't back then....

I know. I actually like Nigella Lawson (her books at any rate) but so many of her "exciting and bold" TV recipes end up tasting bland and oily. There is no place in my universe of half-a-garlic-glove and a sprinkle of thyme.

On the other hand, traditional British food (all boiled, all the time! Now with more gravy!) wouldn't really be made worse by the way airlines treat food....

This is true. Although I think a well seasoned gravy may be one of those things the brits tackled so well. Shepherds Pie, Cottage Pie, Banger and Mash, Roast Beast, all accented by lovely gravy. And yorkshire pudding. Mmmmmm. Even today, I'll buy Knorr's Lamb Gravy mix, targeted for the UK market, but dragged to Canada in specialty stores for our multitude of ex-pat brits.

"Wench! Fetch me another glass of bloody mary mix and some more hot nuts!"

Yeah, that would go over reeeeeeal well now, wouldn't it?

Cheers,

"Olde English (see wench)".

...So English women are wenches, are we? I might be an offense to feminists everywhere, but even I'm no wench.

Once, while staying with a friend in the UK, I decided to earn my keep and tackled the build-up of dirty dishes in the kitchen. On seeing this, her fiancé exclaimed in glee 'Look! She's wenching!'
Said fiancé did not like me staying with them because he wanted her all to himself; I had to spend a weekend in a youth hostel to spare his feelings. (I was staying with her because I'd just moved to the country and didn't have my own accommodations yet.) They got married, I was a bridesmaid, and a few months later he ditched her, saying 'he wasn't in love any more.'
Yet I still find the word 'wench' kind of fun.
