LOL western union. Greetings by wire are so much more personal than... a telephone call where you can use full sentences and not limit yourself to only a few lines? a letter which is your own handwriting/typing and has your signature and can include photographs or postcards or pressed flowers or whatever?

I know! Telegrams are more personal than ads flown on the back of a biplane. Yup.

Given the options I'd actually have to agree with the ad. Long-distance phone calls would have been prohibitively expensive and there's always the pleasure of receiving communication on the day of celebration instead of days before or after like with a mailed letter.

Oh, you're right - those reasons didn't occur to me, especially since people are always making long-distance phone-calls in the old series books I read or in the old movies I watch.
