The cats in the top commercial are ugly! man, they looked like they were plucked from the pound as is, didn't even bother to comb their fur. And the second commercial, oh man! sad times when the latest and the greatest special effect was the back and forward. Sad times the 70's.

aw, why you gotta be hatin'? that's how cats were in the 70s, before boob jobs and brazilians.

Cats are never ugly! The back and forward did make me lol though.

I thought they were cute. And I'm trying to figure out how and why I remember seeing them on TV. I wasn't born until the 80s. Did Purina do updated versions of these? I distinctly remember that "dancing" chow chow chow cat.

I'm not American, and I always thought that "chow" was a slang word for low-grade human food. But cat food actually went with the name "cat chow" then? Learn something new every day...

It's heinous crappy cat food now but in the '70s it was pretty much the best one could get-- what with commercial dry cat food being only widely available since about 1965 or a little later.

Chow is just slang for food in general, or how you eat, or a time. Like - 'Dinner's ready, everybody chow down' or 'time for chow'. It was an military thing, too, you got 'chow' in the 'chow hall' or 'mess hall'.

So in that sense, it really *was* low-grade human food. :)

Oh man, I remember me and everybody I knew wondering why the Chow Chow Chow lady was wearing the same outfit our 80-year-old grannies were wearing!

Those were awesome! Who knew Woody Allen did commercial voiceovers in the '70s. ;)
