Well, considering that there's now a 'Negro' president, they're not doing too badly! The changes that happened in the 60s were absolutely necessary for things to advance to the point that they now have.
Note that 'Negro' wasn't always a term applied only TO black people BY white people, and wasn't always considered negative or offensive - see for example the United Negro College Fund. The usage and cultural value of various words changes over time. Of course it wouldn't be proper to use Negro in this sense today, but in the early 60s it wasn't necessarily unenlightened language.
