Undersea Advertising in Seattle (1955)

The billboards, pulled out of Puget Sound this year, were supposedly aimed at the submarine-commute market. They've been underwater since the 50s (unless there's some serious and clever hoax going on).

Yup! I went to Ivar's for lunch, and they're honoring the 75 cent chowder cup, and the other 'kids under 12 eat free' sign (kid's meals are free with purchase of a regular adult entree). Whether it's a hoax or not, it's very creative!

Haha, cute stuff, but those are definitely fake. :D Modern fonts and the vector lineart definitely give them away.

Do you mean the style of the line-art? Vector art is a method of making the image, and at this size & resolution, would be indistinguishable from a good painter or draftsman's work. We know that the image isn't a fake -- and in fact, they did pull it out of the water. Whether it was down there 50 years or 5 months...

Pardon, I'll clarify! Vector art done with the default brushes in Flash and Illustrator has very obvious stylistic shapes to it- how the lines terminate, the automatic smoothing, that sort of thing- that it makes it really easy to differentiate between that and hand-drawn brushwork once you've worked with the programs for a decade or so. You're totally right, though, good vector art using those programs rarely runs into that handicap... Heck, the same could be said for Photoshop work, and yet there's a lot of Photoshop work that's pretty obviously digital.

And no, I'm not doubting the fact that they were sitting on the bottom of the sound, just that they're from the 50's. :)
