I am no gun expert or anything...but that looks like a sawed off shotgun. Not only would it take the wrinkle out, but the whole garment in question as well.

It's what's referred to as a 'coach gun', used on overland coaches by the driver to fend off, well, pretty much anything. Over really bad stretches there would be an extra person by the driver to handle it, which is where calling the seat by the driver 'shotgun' came from.
Yes, it is sawed off, and has been illegal since the thirties unless the owner has a class three license - the same one you need for machine guns.
