Malnutrition in children used to a huge problem. People, especially poor ones would try this kind of stuff in a probably vain attempt to keep their sickly underfed kids alive.
My mother had to take this when she was a kid! She said it was full of leaves and sticks and horrible things. She can't drink root beer to this day because the taste vaguely reminds her of the tonic.
But it's tasteless! In the days before the vast amount of food and drink regulation we have now (not to mention mediciine), it was probably coloured water...
oh, good lord... I see where this is coming from. In my Sicilian family, a fat baby was a healthy baby. It stemmed from poverty; if the skinny underweight babies did not survive illnesses, and the well-fed plump healthy babies survived infant-hood, then fat = healthy back in the day.
