1942 GE ad
Sept 1942 Better Homes and Gardens. The ad encourages all women to do their bit, and talks about what General Electric is doing for the war effort.

I'm trying to post up one WWII era ad a day. I know we also love gorgeous artistic ads from all eras and also humorous "What were they thinking?" ads, so give me a holler if I'm overwhelming the spirit of the community or if it gets too spammy and I'll cut back.

Actually, I am all ok with ads about communities pulling together and making do with less right now

one GOOD thing about the current economic crisis is that peoples will, hopefully!, learn to make due with what they have and how to cook simple food and not going to KFC every night. there was a resurgence of this WWII 'can do' attitude in the 70s. i have a book entitled i believe WIN (whip inflation now) and it gives tips on how to reuse things such as potato chip cans, coffee cans, crafts to make out of household items, making your own curtains, etc plus recipes and 'leftover' recipes.

i think part of the current problem with our economy is people who have an instant gratification urge. they INSTANTLY want the big house with 4 bedrooms/3 baths and large yard and 2 vehicles and filled with top of the line appliances, gadgets, etc. never mind that their parents/grandparents EARNED first, then bought later! people use to work and save up to buy a big item with a good down payment---for homes and/or cars. but now it's 'no money down' 'no interest for 12 months' etc etc.

/rant sorry....some things get me going! i have a neighbor who won't pay her mortgage but she'll pay $600+ a month to rent a center for tvs, games, furniture. it's that kind of mentality that i think will change...

yeah, but a lot of peoples think they are entitled to get anything when they want it....i think this might be their wakeup call!

this current 'crisis' is over bad mortgage debt....i say there's soon to be another crisis over credit card debt!

I have to agree!

I'm a huge fan of the art styles used in the designs, as well as the type and such. If I'd gone to school for art of some kind, I'd probably have ended up studying early 20th century advertising :P

I love how Mrs Diorio has done her hair up all fancy and put on her makeup, then gone to work with a puffy-sleeved dress at the factory in the first photo in the middle row. I suppose she somehow knew they were taking photos for the advert that day? Or else she's definitely not working around machinery, for her sleeves to be caught in.

agreed. i just made this comment last weekend to a friend. somewhere along the line, the american dream changed from "earning my keep and climbing the ladder by hard work and the sweat of my back" to "doing whatever makes me happy and borrowing to get what i want." we need a national holiday that celibrates those of us that worked out butts off in school so we could get a decent, but far from "enjoyable," job that allows us to care for the families that we love, instead of doing whatever we want at whatever pace we want and hoping the creditors and the government will give us what we need. we can call it "labor day."
/end rant
